Home adaptations = Future Proofing
When you move into your ‘forever home’ the furthest thing from your mind is ‘what happens when the stairs become too difficult?’ or ‘how will I get in and out of bed?’
The majority of us want to enjoy the freedom that comes with living in the home that we spent years investing time and money in, making staying at home instead of going in to a care home more popular than ever.
The great news is that there are a whole range of adaptations that are relatively easy that can enable you to stay safely in your own home.

Future Proof your access
If you have steps into your property then getting in and out of your home will get harder as you get older. Solutions can be as simple as installing outdoor handrails in order to future proof your entrance and make it easier and safer for you.

If you are unable to manage the steps (and there aren’t too many), then another way to future proof is by installing a ramp to provide access. This is also going to be useful for wheelchair or walking frame users.
If your entrance has a lot of stairs then probably the best solution would be to install an external stairlift. This option might also be the right one for you depending on any mobility issues that you have.

We all get forgetful sometimes and who can honestly say that they have never forgotten or lost their keys? Well, a Key Safe is a super simple solution to never get locked out of your home again.
It also safeguards you in the event of an emergency so that your family/carers have access. There is the added benefit too that you don’t have to get up and answer the door if you are not able as those you want to give access to can let themselves in.

Future Proof your stairs
If you or a loved one can no longer manage the stairs at home, the benefits of a stairlift are going to be the quickest and most affordable solution to future proof this area.

If you are finding it difficult to climb the stairs, a stairlift will allow you to regain your independence, stay safe and take the worry out of using the stairs.
Future Proof your bathroom
It’s will come as no surprise that the bathroom can be a dangerous place as we age. There are many trip hazards and situations where it can be much easier to fall or lose balance. Plus there’s the added hazard of wet flooring and slippery surfaces.
There are lots of options to future proof this room based on how little or much assistance you require. It could be that a couple of well placed hand rails are enough to assist you in getting in and out of the shower. Or a seat in the shower if you are unable to stand or have balance issues.
Future Proof your furniture
We’ve covered the most obvious areas that spring to mind when we think about how to future proof and make your home safer. However, many people with mobility issues have an increased risk of falling when trying to get out of their chair or when getting out of bed.
A rise and recline chair can be a simple and effective solution to overcome various mobility issues, increase independence and protect against falls and accidents in the home.

If you struggle to get in and out of bed then an adjustable or profiling bed will help you and in turn reduce the risk of falls.
