Are my stairs too narrow for a stairlift?

Mobility Scotland - We survey, supply and fit stairlifts

It’s not uncommon for stairs to be narrow, have tight bends and turns or for there to be a door or other obstruction that might pose an issue when you are considering a stairlift.

In this article we aim to alleviate some common concerns our customers often have when they have made the decision to install a stairlift into their home.

We know from experience that not every stairlift is suitable for every type of staircase. This is exactly why we partner some of the best stairlift manufacturers like Handicare, Platinum and Access BDD to bring our customers as many options as there are staircase configurations.

We feel confident that we have a stairlift to suit your needs, fit your stairs and exceed your expectations of how life-enhancing a stairlift can be.

Will there be room for other users to get past?

It’s easy to forget that others in the household have to use the stairs too. Our stairlifts ensure that there is plenty of room even on the narrowest of stairs for others to pass by the lift when it is not in use.

All our stairlifts fold up when you are not using it. The arm rests, the seat and the footplate fold neatly away so as not to cause an obstruction for anyone else in the house who is using the stairs.

Our Handicare 1100 has one of the slimmest rails on the market which means that not only is there less intrusion on the staircase but the rail can also be positioned closer to the wall. This leaves plenty of room for others to pass safely on the stairs.

We have a new addition to our stairlift range that allows us to deliver even more options and solutions for our customers. The Flow 2 folds away to a mere 340mm! That’s an incredible 80mm smaller than the length of an A3 sheet of paper!

The Flow2 stairlift is also equipped with automatic swivel technology allowing it to be fitted to almost any type of staircase. The swivel technology turns the chair gently round as it travels up and down. The action means that it hugs turns and bends on the stairs tightly so there is no risk of your knees getting banged on the walls or balustrades; etc.

There isn’t enough room in my entrance hall.

Not everyone has a large hallway that can accommodate a stairlift. Our Platinum Ultimate is the perfect solution for this.

In some cases it would not have been possible to fit a stairlift into a small entrance hallway and comply with health and safety regulations. That is, until the introduction of the Ultimate!

This innovative stairlift starts on the first stair meaning that it doesn’t take up any hall space but still allows you to get on effortlessly from the ground level. How clever!

There is a doorway at the bottom of my stairs, would a stairlift obstruct this?

Whether you have a straight or curved staircase we have a range of solutions for this.

Our Handicare straight stairlift range can come with slide track that moves up the staircase at the same time as the seat is moving, leaving the doorway at the base of your stairs unobstructed.

This automatically moves the track clear of any obstacles while the stairlift moves into a parked position. This option is ideal for hallways where access is required through doorways close to the staircase, either at the top or bottom of the stairs.

Alternatively, if you have a curved staircase then the hinged track is perfect. This comes in an automated version which is ideal if there is more than one person in the household that uses the stairlift. The track can be folded away from the doorway giving clear access and eliminating any trip hazard.
